As well as its two areas of focus, The Bertarelli Foundation is also involved with smaller scale projects in local communities, particularly in Switzerland, Tuscany and north-west England. The Foundation initiates the selection process for these projects and, regrettably, it is unable to accept unsolicited grant applications at this time.

Current initiatives are detailed here, but in the past the Foundation has also supported, among other initiatives, the Henna Free School and Net’Léman.

Henna Pre-School, in the north-east of South Africa, was founded in 1991. Following a visit to the country in 2009 that included a trip to the school, the Foundation’s Trustees sponsored a new wing at the school, dedicated to its youngest students. In 2011, the Foundation supported the construction of a small medical facility at the school.

Net’Léman is the day upon which, annually, Lake Geneva is cleaned by an enthusiastic team of volunteers, who help to rid the waters and shores of waste and rubbish, before sorting it for analysis. In 2012 The Bertarelli Foundation was the main sponsor for the event and among the ten tonnes of rubbish removed were two safes (empty…), a microwave, three televisions, and, unexpectedly, a revolver.
