The youngest of Henna Pre-School alumni, at Huntington village in South Africa, were celebrating on September 23 when they were invited to access their new classroom for the first time.
Seven months since the project was launched, and thanks to the work of eight builders, the new facility was handed over to the principal of the school, Lydia.
The classroom was sponsored by the Bertarelli Foundation in collaboration with Bhubesi Community Projects. It measures 80 square metres and is ready to house 25 children aged 2-3 years for their Grade R activities.
Henna Pre-School currently educates 170 underprivileged children aged from 2 to 7 years old. Located in one of the poorest rural regions in the Mpumalanga area, to the North East of the country, the school provides education for the youngest children in the community, many of whom are orphans.
The school teaches English, as well as games and songs in their mother tongue, Tsonga. All children are also fed two meals a day while at school.
The Bertarelli family decided to get involved and support Henna Pre-School following a family trip to South Africa in the fall of 2008.
